As Broadway readies for a brand new season, we asked which of the upcoming fall musicals you're most excited to see. The votes are in, and populism has prevailed as Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson took the top spot with 39% of votes. The Alex Timbers directed musical had a successful off-Broadway run earlier this year at the Public Theater, where it even took home the Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Off-Broadway Musical. Now the presidential tuner will march uptown (with original star Benjamin Walker), as performances begin September 20 at the Jacobs Theatre.
In second place with 34% of votes is Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Based on the 1989 Pedro Almodovar film of the same name, the new musical features a starry Broadway cast including Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Benanti, Danny Burstein, De'Adre Aziza and Justin Guarini. Presented by Lincoln Center Theater, Women begins performances October 2 at the newly renovated Belasco Theatre.
While it's only early September, the third place contender shows that fans are already eager for the Christmas season. Elf, the new tuner based on the 2003 holiday film, landed in third with 8% of votes. The limited engagement begins performances November 2 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The Scottsboro Boys and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark duke it out for the fourth place slot, with both shows earning 7% of votes. Scottsboro is another off-Broadway transfer from last season, while Spider-Man finally swings onto Broadway after a ten month delay. Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles rounded out the race with 2% of votes.
